Looking for Graphic card with 256 MB memory for additional monitor

Hi

Can any one suggest a good Graphic card with minimum of 256 MB to support additional monitor. The OS shall be windows 7 and The system has 1 PCI-E slot available.

Need something that can go well with existing 128 MB graphics on board in the system

Re [Looking for Graphic card with 256 MB mem]:

Multiple points to think about. Let us take the points one by one:

1. You want a 256 MB card. Now, that is well and okay. However, even for cheap prices these days you can get a graphics card with 1 GB of memory. So your request is reasonably decent in terms of hardware demands. So yes, you will get it.

2. Second thing: it looks like you are in need of multiple monitors. Almost every graphics card comes with two Display output ports. So no issues with that. If you go to http://www.nvidia.in/object/product-geforce-gts-450-in.html , you will see that it has two DVI outputs. usually you would get a single VGA and a single HDMI adapter with the Graphics Card when you purchase it. So no issues with connection two monitors at once.

3. You said the OS would be Windows 7. That is good becuase almost all companies do release drivers for Windows and you would get the software support for the graphics card and an easy way to use them as well. However, if you are planning to install Linux on the system, then it would be better to use NVidia graphics cards as they are better with Linux in terms of drivers.

4. You said that there is one PCI-E slot empty in the system. Two things come into picture here: almost every graphics card needs to have a PCI-E x16 (16 x is the width of the slot). So you need to make sure that the slow is 16x wide. Also, if you could tell the name of the motherboard you are using (or are planning to use), it would be easier to tell about the slots available.

5. Now, we hit the problem: you said that you want it to go well with the onboard video. This is not possible. You cannot use both onboard video and a discreet graphics card at the same time. At any time, only one of them would be at work. This would not be a problem as long as you do not want to use more than 2 displays as almost anyt GFX card you pick from the market will have 2 display outputs.

6. Budget: You did not mention anything about your budget. Since it seems that you just want to monitors to be put up, I guess it would not be pretty high requirement, but still!

If possible, please do tell us about the motherboard you are planning to use (or are already using) and the amount you are ready to spend and we shall help you take a wise decision. :)

Graphics cards do not come under peripherals section. They are one of the CPU components (they go inside the box). Moving it to the CPU Components Boards.
